chance

To start generating movement we made 2 fortune tellers, one with body parts on and another that would tell us what to do with that body part. We had practiced this with Laban's efforts before however this time we considered our theme and used words such as grab, pull and twist. This really helped to embed our theme into the movements.

We took it in turns to use the fortune teller however after a few goes we became familiar with the pattern of the fortune teller. We then had to ask other people in the room to have ago to avoid bias results.

Using the fortune tellers generated a lot of movement but then we had to decide what to keep and what to scrap, this was challenging as we all had to decide as a group and everyone has different opinions. We overcame this by talking about how the movements would best tie in with our theme.

Overall I found it interesting working with chance in this way as it gave us movement material that was new and away from set dance techniques. If I was to complete this task again I would use different body parts that are not often used, instead of arms and legs such as left ear to challenge my self and the group further. The reason I would do this is I feel it would create even more interesting movements an quality's.

Here are one of the movements generated through the chance procedure the grabbing of the shoulder. We thought that this showed control well as we were physically moving the body part.

We used different levels and directions in this motif to show one person in control. The use of levels shows one person higher up than the rest making them appear powerful. Also the reaching movement that was generated through the chance method shows control through the direction, as the one in control reaches up and the others towards that individual suggesting that they are under her power.
