We began to discuss what themes we wanted to portray in the group piece, after we brain stormed a range of ideas we settled on the theme of control. We wanted to show the social control that individuals have over each other in the world around us, and how they use manipulation to get what they want.
As we developed this theme through the movement it started to appear that one member of the group was getting controlled more than the others. I think that this represents this individual as the weakest member of the group as they are more susceptible to the control.
I also like the group dynamic were at points everybody is controlling one person, however sometimes this can look more like bullying. To prevent this we changed the way the control was shown, by having the other members initiate the direction the individual will travel in through their own movements. This reduced the amount of contact and then reinforced the idea of psychological control rather than physical.
Again we had a section in the dance that was very rough and consisted of a lot of pushing we changed this and used a motif that we created by chance. But instead of the individual being able to perform it freely we used the other members to restrict their movement making it look like their is a struggle for control.
As we developed the movements found through chance we came across some interesting motifs that we could use throughout the dance. Examples of these were the clasping of the hand, scratching hands along the floor and also the fists rising up to the front of the face. We chose these because they stood out when other movement was also going on but not so much that it became distracting.
